GOALS:

Promote the work of talented designers, including both established and emerging individuals and companies.

Highlight contemporary eco-design on both a local and international stage.

Demonstrate how design problems are being solved with green solutions.

Demonstrate the capabilities of contemporary green materials and eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

Expand awareness of green options among designers/manufacturers and interior designers/architects/specifiers of contemporary furniture.

Increase awareness of the importance of environmental approaches within the design industry at large.

HISTORY:

HauteGREEN, now in its second year, grew out of A Little Green, a show of eco-friendly furniture organized in May 2005 by Bart Bettencourt, President of Bettencourt Green Building Supplies, and Kimberly Oliver of AmericanSuccessMachinery. That first show included just ten works, all from Brooklyn-based designers. In January 2006, Rebecca Silver of o2-NYC joined the team, and HauteGREEN was created.

HauteGREEN 2006 was held in a converted woodshop in Williamsburg, and included over forty pieces, from designers working in New York and around the world. Among the highlights were BBDRRR, redstr/collective's rug made of fabric scraps from fashion label BOUDICCA, Daniel Michalik's Cortica, a 72" chaise longue made entirely of renewable and recyclable cork, and Tobias Wong and Josee Lepage's WATERRR, a conceptual project that revealed the beauty of used water bottles.
