Bart Bettencourt: Designer/Green Material Supplier

Brooklyn-based designer Bart Bettencourt has made it his prime objective to connect the dots between green design and contemporary design. Bart designs furniture using renewable resources such as hemp, wheatboard, and bamboo, all bound and finished with nontoxic adhesives and finishes. Bart, along with Carlos Salgado, also designs and manufactures the reclaimed wood furniture line SCRAPILE. In the simplest terms this project literally pulls the garbage from local woodshops from the waste stream and transforms it into heirloom quality furniture. This process, though repeatable by design, not only allows, but ensures, that each piece is a one of a kind original. In May 2004, with partner Matt Berk, Bart opened the eco-friendly building materials distribution center Bettencourt Green Building Supplies in an effort to provide NYC with much needed and largely unavailable alternatives to the environmentally damaging industry standards. With BGBS, Bart opened the building supply company that he wished existed when he started working on his own furniture lines. A cornerstone of Williamsburg's emerging design scene, Bart has hosted and curated shows including Joint Venture, Living Spaces 2005, The Ottomans Project, and HauteGREEN.

Kimberly Oliver: Design Publicist/Marketing Consultant

As the principal of AmericanSuccessMachinery, Kimberly works with both emerging and established designers and retailers to strategically raise awareness of their businesses. Kimberly has been in the furniture industry since the early 1990's, when a job at an architecture firm in San Francisco led to a marketing role for a Herman Miller dealer (where she fell deeply in love with the work of Charles and Ray Eames). In 2002, Kimberly moved to New York for the launch of Vitra's retail presence, and then spent two years with Design Within Reach before launching AmericanSuccessMachinery in September 2005. She publicized Joint Venture and Living Spaces in 2004, and produced Joint Venture 2005 and Firstop: Williamsburg Public in 2006. Currently she is producing for Design Within Reach while still working independently with designers. Her clients have recently appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, The LA Times, Surface, Time Out New York, Cargo, and Metropolitan Home, among others. Kimberly was born and raised in rural Maine, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Vassar College.
